Teleworking has surged, since Covid-19, in the workplace and it allows employees to work while not being in the office. That kind of work has both advantages and disadvantages. Here we will focus on the downsides though.
Isolation
Teleworking means not having that face-to-face relationship that you usually have with your colleagues and boss. Thus, an isolated feeling may lead to, sometimes, an emotional disengagement of teleworkers towards the company.
Emotional detachment
If you don’t go to the office, it’s easier to lose your motivation and enthusiasm for the company which isn’t good. In fact, we need emotional and social interactions on a daily basis and teleworking doesn’t help.
Disconnecting from work
Since you don’t work at your workplace but elsewhere, you can easily find it difficult to disconnect from work. This means that you may find it hard to distinguish between your professional life and your personal life (work VS home). As a result, you need to set boundaries and time limits.
No more “good working environment”
When you telework, there isn’t the “good working environment” we’re used to. For example, we talk about the social interactions you have with your boss and colleagues (meetings, having coffee with them, talking about life with them…). The absence of this type of environment reduces the atmosphere of camaraderie and can affect your mental health.
Work performance
With remote working, teleworkers may have to perform more routine tasks so their performance skills might decrease. And with the lack of collaborative or group learning, they risk stagnation in their job evolution and learning process.
Control of the employees
As the CEO or the boss, teleworking can also have downsides for them. If you have teleworkers in your company, it can be difficult for you to control their time and work. As a result, that aspect of teleworking can harm your business.
